A Buoyant Plymouth Albion are in uncharted waters this weekend as they look to secure a third successive victory this term. After a tough start to the season, Damian Welch’s side have shown both the grit and spark needed to make a success of the season in the last few weeks and expectation is high for the momentum to continue to build!
Standing in their way at the Brickfields this weekend is a highly entertaining Caldy side who certainly know how to put on a show. Coached by former Harlequins hooker Matty Cairns, the ‘Ravers’ boast former England counties and sevens flyer Nick Royale out wide while up front the Dickinson brothers add plenty of grunt.
With a record of three wins, two draws and two losses they travel to Plymouth on the back of a 45-40 win over league new boys Tonbridge Juddians. The game itself was remarkable in that Caldy were 45-5 up yet barely clung on at the end. They have taken the peculiar decision to travel 300 miles down on the day and stay post-game so their nickname will be tested by union street whatever the result!
Albion on the other hand are looking very settled with just one change to the starting line-up that produced a very strong come from behind win at Blackheath last week, Will Gibson has overcome a slight niggle to replace Ayden Hurst. ON the bench, the return of Shek Sheriff and Georgian mountain Ramaz Rukhadze will provide support for Danny Southworth and Dan Collier who have put in some big shifts recently.
Speaking ahead of the game Damian Welch said “We’re looking forward to welcoming Caldy for the last game before a bit of a down week after that. We’ve had a pleasing couple of results off the back of a lot of hard work from the boys and they’ve really started to gel as a team. It’s nice to see them get some rewards in terms of points and the performances have been on an upward trajectory to match. This weekend will be a very good test against Caldy who have been going well and producing some great free flowing rugby. We know we’ll need to produce another good performance on Saturday.”
