1979/80 Season

February 23, 2022 Albion

It is Season 1979/80 and Albion have been approached by Llanelli RFC (Scarlets) for a fixture at Beacon Park on Saturday 26th April, K.O. 7 pm

This is the club that on 31/10/72, defeated the Ian Kirkpatrick led All Blacks 9pts to 3. This fixture would be the last time Albion fullback Les Ware would play, as due to an ongoing knee problem he had decided to hang up his boots after 12 Seasons.

A former pupil of Widey Tech, Les who is now Head of physical education at Coombe Dean Comprehensive, joined Albion in 1968 after a spell with the Round Ball in youth soccer, including Plymouth Argyle. He quickly established himself as a ball player, equally adept at either Full Back or Fly-Half. A prolific points scorer his record over the past 4 Seasons alone is an indication of his value to any side. Season 1976/77, 60 penalty goals, 33 conversions, 4 tries, in total 262 points. 1977/78 , 77 penalties, 27 conversions, 6 tries, 4 drop goals, a total of 321 points, this was the 3rd highest individual score in the English rugby season. 1978/79 24 penalties, 25 conversions, 6 tries, 2 drop goals a total of 152 points. 1979/80 37 penalties, 20 conversions, 7 tries, 2 drop goals, totalling 185 points.

He became Vice-Captain in season 1975/76, and Captain in 1977/78, he has also been holder of the Goal Kicking Cup for the past 5 seasons. For a man who was temporarily paralysed at 16 while taking part in a school long jump competition and told afterwards by a specialist the only sport he would ever be able to do would be walking and gentle swimming because of a deformed spine, he has made a tremendous impact on one of sports toughest games.

With regard to the Match, Albion won 9pts to 3, a try from Chris Hocking, and yes, you’re right, Les kicked a penalty and converted the try.
