A slightly different topic this week as we look at the build-up to the season 34 years ago.

The Club announce youth rugby will be played this season, ranging from Under 19’s, training at Beacon Park, Mondays and Thursdays, 7pm till 9pm.  Under 16’s and 15’s will train Thursday’s starting at 7pm, and Under 14’s and Minis 8-13 year old would train on Sundays starting at 10-30 am. The Club Captain, Ian Gregory announces in June, that pre-season training will commence on Monday 9th July and will be held at Bluebell Woods every Monday and Wednesday until the end of October and then, training would return to Marjon.

On the 20th of July, Albion announce that 23-year-old flanker, Duanne Monkley from New Zealand has signed for the Club, at six feet tall and 15 stone , he is an All Black trialist. He is due in Plymouth on the 10th of October and will have to wait 12 weeks before he can play in a league fixture. Clive Cross, Chairman of Selectors also announced that another New Zealander, Paul Townsend, who can play wing or centre has signed for Albion, and 3 Cornish players had also signed. Dave Rule, Scrum-Half, Kevin Thomas, Full Back and Tony Meade, Centre.


With the new signings, competition for places will be very competitive, for example at fullback John Butcher and Kevin Thomas will contest the position, on the wings Steve Walklin, Kevin Turton and Charlie Taylor, in the centre Nick Leonard, Barry Vallance, Andy Kellett and new Divisional Under 21 player Tony Mead will all be in the “Frame”. In the forwards, there are props, Chris Hocking, Nigel Saunders and Paddy Brooks, hookers Bruce Priday, David Fuge and new man Jack Rickard.


The second row sees Mark Wesson, Andy Reed and Terry Chapman in contention, while the backrow has last seasons Captain Kevin Norris, Duane Monkley (after 12 weeks ) and former Devonport Services Captain Steve Jones , Ian Gregory, Mark Hewitt, Ian Russell and Roger Bailey.  Away from the playing side, Chairman will be Vernon Pinches,

  • Chairman of Selectors – Clive Cross,
  • Match Secretary, Ken Wheeler,

The season saw Albion have 192 Vice-Presidents and 9 Life Members.
