Fuge Throwback

September 8, 2022 Albion

Albion this summer have beaten the bugbear of so many Clubs – that of players drifting apart during the close season and having to strive to get fit in time for the start of the season. They have done so by the unprecedented step of keeping their Ground and Club House at Beacon Park open throughout the summer. There has been training at the ground on Tuesdays and Social events in the Club House on Saturday evenings. Attendances at both have more than warranted the extra voluntary work required.

On average, about a dozen or more players have attended the training evenings- playing football, running and keeping fit. Three or more times this number have attended the Social events. The training sessions have maintained a general standard of fitness and assured a continuance of Team spirit so apt to slide during the close Season.

Meanwhile, a great amount of work has been going on, in the absence of a regular Groundsman. Players have come forward willingly to assist in painting and renovation. Supporters will be greatly surprised by the improvements that have been achieved. To aid in the extra work three new members have been co-opted onto the Albion Committee. They are Messrs Selwyn Morgan, Rodney Dart and George Westlake.

The Pitch is looking in the best condition ever for the start of a season, the rather bald area in front of the main Stand was seeded immediately and has grown very well. On the playing side Albion welcome back from National Service Peter Wevill and Gerald Dyer. Peter played occasionally for Albion last Season while stationed at Honiton. Peter can play at Outside Half or Centre. Gerald Dyer has played some good Rugby while with the R.A.F. in the Far East. He will be remembered as a splendid Wing for the United side and a prolific try-scorer. It will be interesting to see if his improvement will put him in the running for a regular place in the 1st XV.

Before the Season starts, Albion will have lost a valuable player in Dylan Evans, the Neath-born Outside-Half who came to Albion last Season from Carnegie Physical Training College. Dylan proved to be an Outside-Half with excellent hands and good pace. He is taking up a Physical Education Teaching post in New Brunswick, Canada. During his time in Plymouth, he was in charge of Physical Education at Tamar Secondary School.

Albion’s serious training starts on August 5th, with Trial Games being played on th last two Saturdays of August . The first Trial will start at 3pm, and the two Teams will be as follows. Williams, G.Dyer, B.Stoneley, G.Martin, S.Smith, M.Evans, C.Spencer, C.Mapstone, A.Taylor, B.McGrath, R.Parsons, P.Venn, D.Holdsworth, P.Luffman, C.Cross.    The Rest, T.Smitherram, E.Hall, W.Glastonbury, K.Pring, R.Stephens, V.Pinches, D.Sweet, L.Bentley, G.Evans, P.Clements, F.Baser, C.Dean, M.Hoskin, G.Palmer, J.Foster.
