On this Saturday afternoon, Albion faced Devonport Services at Beacon Park having already beaten them 11-3 on 3 November under the Rectory Park lights.

The previous week, Albion had beaten Esher away 17-12, but the selectors were not happy with the team’s performance and decided that changes were necessary. Out went Fly-Half John Putt and Flanker – Wing-forward in old money – Roger Jewell. The former was replaced by Chris Morgan – a former Plymouth College pupil who had been coached by Ted Mercer, Albion’s captain in the 1935-26 campaign while at the college.

Jewell was swapped out for Chris Martin, who was a teacher at the Plymouth School. Centre Roger Morrish and Hooker Brian Gurry were also brought back in having missed out on the Esher win.

Albion gained the expected double over rivals Services despite being reduced to 14 men after losing Fly-Half Morgan with a cut mouth after 37 minutes; he was taken to hospital. Full-back Gordon Hook took over at 10 while Martin moved to Full-back. One would have thought the Services might cash in more readily on Albion’s enforced reshuffle, but they lacked penetration outside the scrum.

Albion started strongly with Wing Barry Attis and Scrum-Half Nick Vosper combining well for a try for the latter. Geoff Fabian equalised with a penalty for the visitors shortly afterwards, but Albion quickly regained the advantage through a fine try in the left corner by Wing Dave Westlake. Hook converted from the touchline and, before half-time, he added two more penalties.

Services’ George Bardwell reduced the arrears with an opportunistic try early into the second period, but another penalty by Hook followed Westlake’s second try. This gave the hosts a deserved victory.

It is interesting to note that playing at Number 8 for the Services was another former Plymouth College pupil, Chris Brant. Later in his career, Fabian would wear the cherry, white and green of Albion.
