In memory of Nick Southern

Sadly we have been informed of the Passing of Nick, on 20th April.Born on 23/1/1938, Educated at Burleigh Secondary School, became an Electrician and later in life became a Publican, at The Marquise of Granby in Devonport.Joined Plymouth Albion, Season 1957/58, making his 1st XV Debut on 13th September 1958, away to Teignmoth RFC, Albion winning 14pts to 11. His last 1st XV Match was on 8th January 1972, against Guy’s Hospital, at Beacon Park, Albion won 22pts to nil. Unfortunately, Nick suffered a Slipped Disc and did not play again that season, and decided to retire from 1st Team Rugby. However, he returned to playing at 2nd Team and 3rd Team level, eventually hanging his Boots up in 1980, having played 377 1st XV matches, a Club record at the time.In Season 1964/65 he was appointed Vice-Captain and appointed Captain for Seasons 1965/66 and 1966/67. He played Number 8, Second Row, and in his latter Seasons played Tight Head Prop.Nick also gained Representative Honours, playing for Devon from 1960 until 1966, gaining over 35 Caps, he played in the County Championship Final at Home Park on 11th March 1961, against Cheshire, the Match ending nil/nil. Prior to this he represented South Western Counties against South Africa on 7th December 1960, played at Camborne RFC, the Boks won 21pts to 9. In Season 1962/63, Nick played in the Final England Trial Match held at Torquay RFC, unfortunately, he failed to be “Capped”. His final Representative Match was against Australia, played at Camborne RFC, on 3rd January 1967, South Western Counties being defeated 6pts to 11.After Nick’s playing days were over he severed on various Committees, including being a “Selector”, and was made a Life Member of Plymouth Albion.We send our deepest sympathy to Nick’s Family and Friends.
