Season 1959/60

January 26, 2023 Albion

Plymouth Albion v Ebbw Vale – Saturday 5th December, 1959

To date Albion had played 12 Fixtures, Won 6 Drawn 1 and Lost 5, and the programme notes stated that ” Our Gates have been very poor so far this season and we would ask all our supporters to encourage their friends to come along and see our Matches, we feel sure they would soon form the habit of coming to Beacon Park”

Ebbw Vale defeated in only three games so far this season, brought a powerful side to Beacon Park, comprising eight County Players and two Welsh Trialists. Albion were at Full Strength; the side included five of the Devon side that last Saturday played Cornwall.

A succession of lineouts opened the match and most of them around the Vale “25”. The Welsh forwards made repeated efforts to burst through and succeeded in disrupting any clean ball for Albion. Then, with the game 7 minutes old, Vale made scoring look easy. fly-half Bill Hunt broke clean through with an angled run and passed the ball to centre Geoff Davies who scored in the corner, Denzil Williams converted. With rain falling, Albion centre Bill Glastonbury tried a long penalty kick which had the length but not the direction.

After 18 minutes, Vale missed a seemingly certain try when danger man Hunt broke clear and passed to wing Mel Williams, who failed to catch the ball and a certain try was lost. Thanks to some excellent work by the Albion forwards, the home side had plenty of possession, but Vale’s quicksilver three-quarters were a constant threat, leaving the half time score Albion nil Vale 5pts.

After 5 minutes of the second half, Albion were level, a quick pass from a line-out on the halfway line put Glastonbury away, and he cut through with a splendid inside pass to wing Eddie Hall who scored under the Posts, Glastonbury converted. Within 5 minutes Albion took the lead when awarded a penalty which Glastonbury converted.  Shortly after this Albion appeared to have scored another try when Clive Cross went over, only to be recalled due to a knock-on. Vale were not finished yet, and Centre Geoff Davies made a 50-yard run before being tackled by Nick Southern. With minutes remaining Vale again came within inches of scoring when Ed Southern managed to get to the Ball as it rolled into the in- goal area kicking it out of play, just as a Vale forward was about to fall on it. Final score Albion 8pts Ebbw Vale 5pts.

Albion thus recorded their first-ever win over Ebbw Vale, following up their earlier win over Pontypool earlier in the season.
